Hello Everyone,
Our seeds are on the way and we're back to the huge garden again. We are looking forward to spring but it's only March and we know all to well how bipolar March can be. This years plans are big and it is contingent on the help we are promised this season. Our next move is a portable green house so we can grow our own tomatoes here, they have always been hit or miss because of our shorter growing season. I am in hopes to order that next week and have it here in time to put it up and get it set up inside to do it's job. It has become the next homestead priority to grow our tomato's as the pick your own farm we used to get ours from will not be planting this year.The old dilemma of the folks aging out and having health issues, and the next generation not wanting to be farmers.
I'm not going to say I blame them, farming is hard work and we now have a society that seems to look down on a laborer. I fear our grandchildren's generation will see through the roof food prices because we are running shorter every year on farms in America. A serious trend that needs to be reversed. I have and will always believe we cannot trust food produced in other countries to feed us. We need farmers in America feeding Americans like it was when I was young. Near anything can disrupt a foreign food source, and food can become a means to control not only to an individual, but a nation as well. The path we are on is a steep slippery slope that needs to be abandoned.
We have plenty to do this coming season with allot going on. Timbers have to be cut and milled, the new shed put together along with the other things that have to be done such as haying cutting the firewood. and the tending of the garden and livestock, along with any of those little emergencies that crop up from time to time on a homestead and of coarse the day always begins and ends with milking the cow. Once she is in milk again, I am guessing that will be around May.
In the mean time keep on growing your own, or preparing yourself to, if you have children teach them all they will need to know. If it's grandchildren you have around, who better to teach them than you.
